A day of could have been's for me....
Launched at about 8-8:30am and headed straight to the rocky point by the RV park. Pounded the area with jigs, shakey heads, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and didn't get touched. Got a chance to say hi to "buzzbait" finally! (looked for you later in the afternoon, but couldn't find you). I moved in to fish the shallow docks on the rocky point, and again nothing. By this time there were 4 other bass boats on the water, guess the mid 50's water temps are getting everybody fired up? Sweet! Working my way back out and up the point to the n.w. I spooked two nice smallies just cruising in the shallows, not really sitting on specific cover that I could see. At least that confirmed fish were "up"! I was optimistic to say the least!
Fishing north along the west shore I alternated between two different crankbaits and the shakey heads one brown and one green with neither producing a strike. I decided to try the old stand-by, my Yamamoto grub on a 1/4oz jighead. Fished a few very shallow docks twitching the grub alongside them, I hooked into the 3.7lb smallie in the pic while reeling back in on one cast, this got me to start slow rolling the grub, and that seemed to make the difference... Two docks later I hook into a largemouth, about 4lbs, he runs me all over and gets behind a boat lift, this is not good as I only have 8lb flourocarbon on and can't exactly 'horse' him out of there! He makes a run towards me and wraps around a leg of the lift and we just kind of stare at each other for 5 seconds, it was kinda funny actually! I stay bowed up on him, but when he puts it in reverse the hook comes out and off he goes back under the dock, followed by what had to be a 6lber!! Drats!
I hook around through the shallow north end, and the smallies are absolutely everywhere!! Darting off, out in the middle of nothing just cruising or sitting by very small rocks in about 6' of water. I must have counted 30 smallies at various points all around the lake that would wait until I was nearly on top of them and then just swim off, or they would dart off when I casted near them! Frustrating.
Got to the extreme n.e. corner of the lake, and found a spot loaded with smallies! Casted everything in the boat at them and could only get follows. It was cool though! I wondered if the glass smooth water was shutting them off, or the previous weekends tournament?? Either way, it was strange. Heading back south on the east shore, I casted near a dock, was reeling in and got slammed!! Hooked up for a second and she came off! Another big largemouth!! Judging by the size of the tail fin I would say easy easy over 5lbs!
For the next 3+ hours I fished all over this lake, all my favorite spots from water 1'-12' deep and couldn't get anything going. The wind had picked up fairly good by about 3pm but before heading home, I decided to go seek my revenge on the largie that got the best of me earlier, so back to the shallow docks, and wham! This time it was the bigger female!! Boy did she make a couple runs!! One was from about 5' off the side of my boat 20' and back up under the dock! Again, 8lb test, and again patooey out came my grub:(....
On closer inspection, the tip of the hook on my grub was bent, must have happened on a rock I snagged....rookie error on my part and it cost me 3 very quality largemouth....crap.
Oh well, got this thing called a "sunburn", enjoyed water temperatures nearing 60 degrees and spent a great afternoon with my dogs! Can't complain! Besides, the little buggers gotta eat sometime?! However, this "one fish wonder" syndrom I seem to have keeps up too long and I may have to change my name to "H8myB8's" LOL.
