Well it is good to be able to report some positives in regards to the cutthroat fishery in this lake. The surface temps remain between 47 and 49 degrees but the lake is beginning to show signs of activity. Launching at Newport, the water visibility was about a foot at best. Coal creek had been running high and muddy for the last week and really put some color in the lake. I was sure May creek had done the same so I headed to the opposite side of Mercer Island to find some clear water. I found smolt activity just outside of Andrew's Bay and shortly thereafter hooked and landed a 19" cutt 25' down on the rigger. I worked the area hard for another 2 hours with no luck, I can't imagine that there was only one fish in the area. The water was very clear here, I could see the bright yellow tip of my release clip at over 20' down. I suspect the jet skiers that showed up disrupted the fish a bit. Headed up to the North side of I-90 to see if I could pick up another fish before calling it a day. It took a little while but eventually I picked up a 14" fish that I'd classify as a hybrid. It hit at 30' down on the rigger and took the same lure as the other fish, a silver flatfish covered with a UV clearcoat. By that time the wind started to pick up coming out of the West, so I headed back to the launch and called it a day.

I always take a few months off in the dead of winter, and really start to focus on the Lake in late March or Early April. We will see the thermoclines define a bit more, and bait balls starting to show up, which tends to liven things up. This is the beginning of the season where I get more of the larger Rainbows vs Downstream Cutts.

Things will get nothing but better in the next month or so ...

Mav, that's an accusation I can live with!
A side note: Anyone know the owner of CHECKPOINT II? A nicely set-up C-Dory that I've seen out on the lake a few times.

Hey G-Man (or anyone else who fished washington), do you have a suggestion on a good dock to fish off for cutts? I don't have a boat, just looking for a good spot to fish from, dock wise, that doesn't have glowing fish like at Coulon hahaha. Thanks.

Soulfishhawk, we are rapidly approaching the end of good shore fishing for trout in Lake Washington. You can give anyone of the following a try. Kennydale, Newcastle and Enatai for still fishing and Luther Burbank for casting. Kennydale is a very small swimming beach and is probably through producing by this time of year. Luther Burbank is more of a deep water dock and I doubt you will catch any trout fishing off the bottom. One other place that you can try is at the mouth of the Cedar river off the Cedar River Boathouse dock. If you are so inclined you can even rent a canoe or kayak and check out the delta. Bring waders and you can get out and walk around on the delta and fish the edges.

I have a C-Dory and fish the lake for Cutt G-Man. Nice fish as usual by the way. If you search on CBrats, you will find the Checkpoint II under user name Chromer.
