Decided to get out on the lake for some recon of the north end with a some fishing on the side as I wanted to avoid the zoo that I was sure the south end was going to be. The weather was fantastic, with minimal wind and the surface temps were between 57 and 58 degrees in all the areas I visited. Ran up to Sand Point and started looking for bait trolling north along the shore towards Thorton Creek. Finally found some out in 100+ feet of water but no predators other than the grebes were after them. Ran further north to Arrowhead point and trolled the break for a bit. Noticed that the west side of this area had stained water while the west side was nearly clear. Nothing going on here at all so I headed further north to check out the WDFW launch in the Slough. The launch and parking lot seemed to be in better condition than I remember from many years ago. Also the channel leading from the launch out to the main part of the lake was deep enough for me to navigate my deep-v hull 18.5' boat with the lake being drawn down a couple of feet. This launch should be good for boat up to 20' especially when the lake level raises come late spring. On my way back to take out I stopped by the I-90 bridge and found a good amount of bait on the south side, again with no larger fish on the finder. There was a large amount of jetsam in the area with the algae being quite dense at the surface and the daphnia were visibly feeding on the bloom. Not too many boats out on the north end of the lake and most were being civil. The only jerk out there was the King County Sheriff buzzing boaters in their large bi-hull. Looking forward to the lake turning over and the bite to pick-up.

G-man,
Your post intrigued me. I had to google "Jetsam" and "Daphnia" to see what they were. It appears you saw some garbage floating in the water, and some small bugs. Correct? Two new words for me to add to my vocabulary.
Happy fishing

AJ's dad, I guess that I'm not the only person who still looks up unfamiliar words. I wish my kid would do that instead of coming to me all the time! Thought it might not seem so, I like to keep my reports as short and concise as possible. Using terms like jetsam and daphnia help me do that. Plus, isn't jetsam a cool sounding word?

What do the ask when cops stop you on the water? Thanks for your report.

Danm, my issue was that they didn't stop at all. They just seemed to be out for a joy ride and buzzed by many boats, unnecessarily close I might add. I've been stopped before and it is pretty much the same as a traffic stop. If you know you were doing something wrong before they stop you, you can bet that is the reason why you were stopped. As I'm one of the few boats out on the water during the winter months I get the "once over" now and again. The casual, "how's it going?", while they eye up the contents of your boat and number of lines in the water. Occasionally they will ask to see if you have a valid fishing license and when sockeye season is open, to make sure you document your catch immediately after you keep a fish. Don't give them any grief unless you are sure your boat can pass inspection. I remember having my son ask me what the red tube was that was handed to the Sheriff's boat by a boater running too close to the bridge. I told him that is what happens when you are not polite to the police and to continue to watch as life jackets, safety equipment, etc. was checked.
