I went into work this morning and work was suddenly cancelled. I came home and packed the boat for lake WA. I put in at Magnusson park. Headed straight over to the N. side of the 520 bridge.
As usual I marked a lot of bait balls and feeding fish. I am a little confused on this though....
I would expect this time of year to see the cutts. in shallower water, mabye 40-50'. The bait balls along with feeding larger fish were 100-110' and some balls even at 140'.
I assume that this is sticklebacks with feeding cutts...? I wouldn't think it was perch schools?? Too many big fish marked around the bait ball.
Anyway.. I had some brined herring left over from last week, so I started with a cutt plug herring behind a flasher. No strikes, but I only gave it a short while. I then went to a mini green Silver Horde hootchie with some sparkle strands in it. behind the same flasher. This has been my most successful hootchie out here. I brought in a small 10" ish fish that I was a little confused by. (released of course) It def. was not a cutt. I don't believe it was a rainbow either. The head was much more pointed/tapered than a rainbow. Tongue was black,, but the gums were not black. (remember it was a juvenile) The tail was more forked than a rainbow or cutt. Body was more silver.... with a small amount of spotting along the spine.
Small coho?? But black tongue makes me thing blackmouth?? I suppose they are in the lake at some point from spawning.
That was all she wrote. Lets see some more lake reports folks. If it's not below 30 deg. then get out there and git er done.

You don't have to be fishing in Puget Sound to hook a shaker blackmouth! On the bright side, that 10" shaker probably fought harder than the 17" cutt I caught yesterday.
