My mouth has been watering for some tasty perch so I headed down to Coulan Park to fish off the dock for awhile in the a.m. Using a 3/8 oz. sinker on the end and #6 baitholder hooks with yellow plastic skirts and perch meat 4' and 5' above I cast out as far as I can and let settle on the bottom. I had fish on before getting slack out of my line. Got several 'doubles' and kept about two dozen over 13" , putting them on ice as they were caught. I never use a stringer or let them sit in the water after being caught

Releasing the smaller ones was made easier because I pinch down the barbs, and after casting I reel in v e r y s l o w so I can feel them tug before they have a chance to swallow the hook. Fishing from shore this way, I don't use the weighted jig heads, just the bare hooks with the jig skirts so they flutter easily without dragging on the bottom.

Many years ago while fishing the Potholes Res. in eastern Washington a fishing buddy showed me how to quickly filet perch and I later discovered keeping them on ice not only keeps them fresher, (and being firmer from the ice), makes them easier to filet. Only way to do it.

I dip the filets in milk and after a light coating of Crustese I deep fry them for about two minutes, taking them out just before the centers start turning white. The residual heat finishes the cooking. A batch of wild rice, sliced tomatos and avacados round out a meal fit for a king.

Very nice report, complete with a recipe for the fish. Nice also to read a report from someone who appears very conscientious about how they fish. Good work.

That sounds so good... Is there a spot for recipes on the forum? If so this should for sure be up there.

Nice Job.

Man, I usually hang up the poles for winter, until Spring rolls around. Hmm..

I used to be a fair weather fisherman.......but when I broadened my horizons a whole new world opened up and I wouldn't turn back the clock for anything. Winter steelhead in the rivers, Nov-Feb squid fishing after dark on Puget Sound piers, ice fishing offers amazing varieties, etc. Lake Washington and other year around lakes are my favorite. Now I just gotta figure out where the crappie are hanging out. I hear tell a state record came out of this lake.

Could tell me which coulon park area were you fishing for this perch?
I went there around 4pm and during first 30 minutes, nothing bite.
I fished near dock area right next of boat launch.

My report on Nov 6 was a fluke day for this time of year. Just happened that all weather conditions lined up to bring them to the shallower water at that particular time.......and I was there. Generally, with all the cold fronts and water temps and erratic pressure fluxuations, perch go to the deeper water (50' or more) until spring.

Even in the best of times expecting a banner day in just 30 minutes is not realistic. Perch go around in schools (according to size) and you can wait anywhere from ten minutes to several hours......or not at all depending on their depth preference. Fishing in just one spot is pretty limiting. My strategy is to pitch a line in different areas for about 10 minutes at a time until I catch fish. I fish all over Coulon Park that way.

Thanks for the posting poppapatty!
I think you were right. All perch are went into very deep water. I fished here and there around 2~3 hours but not even one single bite.
I saw several others are same result. I was kind of intimated on your original post since I never forgot this tasty fish :P
There's not much pan fish fisher man around this forum so keep up the update when you have nice day :)
Thanks a lot.

Good Job!!!
Keep your fish on ice is my old trick.....sure makes for great filets and easier filleting. Been wanting to get the boat out there and get my share of those bait thieves.....just waiting for the wind to die down. Great report
