Went out to LK. WA. fishing for cutts. on Wed. It was a nice day with mostly clear skies. Water temp. was 55 deg. I launched at Magnuson and decided to head across to Kirkland. I was fishing a flasher, can't remember the name, it has a weird shape, not traditional. followed by a Silver Horde mini hootchie. Green w/speckles. Within about 5 minutes of the launch I noticed by rod tip behaving unevenly.. but I did not pull it up for quite some time. I should have done so, because I brought in a small 12" cutt. He got dragged across the lake, so in the cooler he went, my bad. Even though I have played with where I place the line in the clip, I have trouble getting the fish to release, so I now am very watchful for any changes in the rod tip action.
Went by Hunts/Evergreen point where I saw a few other boats fishing. When I got to 520 I started marking a lot of bait balls with larger feeding fish in pursuit. These were mostly at 80-90'.
Within 10 minutes I had that same uneven tip action. I broke away from the clip and pulled up a 19" 3.0 lb cutt. I had just started using an ultra-light lamiglas rod, and it was a blast to reel in.

There you go Quad! I knew I should have played hooky on Wednesday. The weather forecast for this Friday and the weekend doesn't look too friendly. Put 4 to 5 feet of 40+lb mono on your release and put a serious bow in your rod, you'll know immediately when you've got a fish on the other end.

Quad you need different tension clips! Light for trout, Medium for smaller salmon Silvers, and a heavy one for Chinook! Nice fish! Light action Lami and Loomis rods are a hoot to fish with

going postal, the cutts on the throat are not always seen on cutthroat trout. It can depend on the time of year/spawn or no spawn, and the particular variety of cutthroat. There are more than one. Others on here can attest to that.

Nice report... I have had the same problem w/ poor dr release. What works for me best is size four rubber bands attached to the line and dr release. The bands are easier on 6 lb line, plus you can see the action of the dodger or spoon very well. Easier to detect when fouled. I have gone 12 for 12 hook ups on cutts at
wawa. With the bands its irrelevant where you connect to the clip.

This is a simple and cheap solution. the edge.

there are some nicve fish there mate...i have the same problems with release clips i hang my line far back on the clip as i can. braid line slips easier too..imo.. as for the cut/rainbow issue you have to lift the skin to see the red lines you cannot see them from a picture unless your reallly close..

I use the Scotty release clips for all my Downrigger fishing. BIG ones for kings and Silvers, the small ones for trout. Plus they are adjustable, and I do run them back 3' or so from the ball, use lite rod and a tight line. Trout will pop it most every time, Perch will not. I fish pretty lite .. 8# main and long 6# leaders to my lures. I do run every thing pretty far back from the ball, tho I've caught some nice fish with a much shorter distance. I do watch the rod tip religiously tho ...
