Well I was planning on pre-fishing a few spots in the Sound for tomorrows derby but that nice cool temps enticed the wife and I to sleep a little later than planned. Decided to "tune" the gear in the Lake instead and try for some kokes while I was at it. It was interesting to see that two police offercers were stationed at the Newport launch this morning and two were there as I took out early afternoon. They were there just to make sure folks paid their launch fees, write tickets for expired tabs and ensure the drunks didn't drive. Why they didn't direct folks to use the open "retreive" ramp I'm not sure but it saved me some time in line when I hopped up there and put the boat in while everyone else in line looked confused. The surface temps were as bad as I've ever seen them, 76 to 78 and when I got out on the water the surface already looked like the water in a washing machine. Now I don't typically target kokes in this lake as I usually do ok hooking into them while trolling for cutts. Today I slowed down the troll and rigged up with my favorite kokanee gear in hopes of catching dinner for this evening. Needless to say, the standard kokanee tatics don't seem to work in this lake. After a couple of hours with no action, I gave up, switched gears and targeted the cutts. As you may have guessed the first two fish to the boat were kokes and the second two were cutts, go figure. The hot spot was the North side of the 520 bridge West of center and between 35 and 45 feet down. The kokes were nothing special 10" and 12" and the cutts went 2 and 3 pounds each. Neither cutt had any fresh food in their stomachs which makes me wonder if they didn't come out of the salt recently.

If the salmon fishing in the Seattle area is as bad this year as it was last year, I'll be out there with you guys. Plus someone still needs to figure out how to get those Silvers to hit North of 520.
