We launched at 5:30 and trolled (.5 to 1.0 in S pattern at 20-30’ with down riggers) until 11:00. Besides the single 8” bow we caught at 6:00, not even a bite. We then switched over to bottom fishing with white w/ worm. Nothing. At 1:00 we switched to spin cast with rooster tails, spoons, castmasters, ect for bass in the East cove. One small mouth, one broken pole, and 5 lost rigs. Water temp was 72.5. Its been a year since I have been up to Mineral. I did notice A LOT of surface feeding when we first arrived. If I were to do it over again I would troll super slow with two or three floating lines with flys. Maybe bring the fly fishing gear. I am sure that we would have hooked up with a great morning delight that way.

Have you ever had much luck fishing for smallies on Mineral? I have never fished the lake before, but have been thinking about checking it out for bass.

While I have not personally had much luck, I know that other anglers have had luck with jigs (and worms with worms w/ locked hooks) in the cove that sits just below Rainier adjacent to the boat launch. It offers lots of structure, most holding plenty of lost rigs, that harbors smallies. I gave up because of the wind. We tried drifting, but the cove was clogged with other boats and after snapping a rod it was time to go fetch a beer. With high water temps, I was sure that the shade would produce strikes. It just goes to show how important it is to know your holes better. I should have better known about the hidden logs that cost me money on that day. ?
