Tried Williams for the first time and had a great day!!! Had a friend with me today who has fished this lake a few times and knew right where to go. We headed for Tree 11 about 11am and anchored down. Fished in about 25-30 feet of water for approx. two and a half hours. I started with a ball of power bait with worm combo. Had hits but nothing for 30 minutes or so. My friend had caught two right away. I decided to go with a power bait combo of mine (power eggs/power bait mix). From then on it was catch after catch - all between the 8 to 17 in. range. We also moved across from Tree 11 to the other side of the lake and just drifted down the lake's shore and that was hit after hit as well pulling in more and heading home about 6:15pm. We fished for fun mostly but did take 5 home between the two of us (the good ones for the BBQs!!). Great day!!!!

Apparently you are not aware that if you use bait, you can't practice catch and release and fish until you are tired of catching fish. When you catch your limit, in this case, 5 fish, you are done for the day. This regulation was put in place because a lot of fish don't survive after being released. The fish usually (not always) take the hook deeper and is lethal to the fish. I'm not trying to beat you up about it, simply make you aware.

I agree with Toonman. Although you never mentioned the total number of fish caught, your report sounds as though you greatly exceeded your daily limit of 5 trout per angler.

Williams is one lake that tends to get hit pretty hard by local gamies. I've personally been checked every time I've been there for the last couple of years. When I go to williams I typically go there for a full day of fishin' fun. I've got only rig that I use on that lake and one method of presentation that keeps me legal to c&r all day long. It also allows me to keep the fish out of a net and out of my hands. The first time I was checked I had my full tackle box with me and ended up having to stand my ground with the gamies in order to assure them that my rig is the only one I use on this lake. I usally keep a handsome bounty for the smoker but this also draws a raised eyebrow from other fisherman and officials alike. I have come to expect that I'll have a run in and quite frankly I am tired of defending myself and my fishing methods so as a result I leave any questionable tackle in the truck or at home. Knowing the regulations and all definitions is worth much more than losing the privilege of enjoying our sport. Be safe, aware, and informed out there and tight lines to all.
