Fished solely for spiney rays. Fished the docks and along the shoreline. Caught roughly 30 rockbass and one accidental rainbow. Understand that I am not really a bass fisherman, and that I am trying to learn it, because to me, fishing and developing skill with the chance to catch nice big hard hitting fish highly outweighs sitting in a boat holding a pole, trolling, and knowing that you are going to catch little trout and never improving your fishing talent. I also do not really know American Lake. I can catch trout, easily, as can everyone, but that is not really the challenge that I am looking for. So, when you read this, don't think that the bass fishing sucks there just because I didn't do any good at it. There are surely others out there that can catch them.
Fished a variety of bass gear. I stuck with the 2" brown power grub on a light leadhead jig and caught the most. My buddy used everything in the world and caught the most of his just dropshotting a nightcrawler.

We were out there Monday and caught a ton of smallies. Then we went out today and caught nothing but rock bass. That lake can be tuff and welcome to bass fishing congrats on trying something new.

I really like what you wrote. I freaking hate sitting by the shore with a pole in the water waiting. I have been fishing for 30 years and have done my fair share of it. I remember The first year I started bass fishing. It was on otay lower otay lake in san diego ca. This is i tough lake. I do not even recall catching a fish. What I do recall was learning every thing I could about bass fishing. I love it. Most people I see on the banks of the lakes here (no boat) are fishing for trout. They look at me like I am crazy for throwing a 5" plastic worm right in the middle of any type of cover. I am only interested in one type of fish on lakes and thats bass. I also let them all go. I would rather catch one 10lb bass than a 1000 trout.. When people say "good luck" to me I just smile and say thanks. I know its the skills that put the fish in my photo album.

Thanks tylies. I have always been a steelhead fisherman and just recently got a little 12' boat and for the first time ever fished other than Forks, where there are no bass. I took the kids out and some friends and caught some trout. But, one friend wanted to fish for bass so we started, and I honestly cannot even think about a trout any longer. I have caught about 15 bass so far and all little. The biggest being about 1 1/2 pounds out of Lake Kapowsin. But I am learning and trying and casting and thinking and it really, in a way, it reminds me of fishing for Steelies. You pick the riggin', you cast, you feel the bite, you set the hook, you play the fish, it is mostly all skill.
I love it!
