Took my fiancee up to MarDon Resort (for the first time ever for her) and got to see the local Bass club Tounament weigh in at 5:30 p.m. Man, those guys were weighing in some really big pre spawn Largemouth and Smallies! The biggest fish that I saw weighed was a 6.8 lb largemouth. The biggest bag was at 21.4 pounds for a 5 fish limit. Judging by the number of boats at mid lake on the way in to the resort, people seemed to have been doing pretty well. We left just before the last weigh in so we would have time to do a little fishing. I tried a snake river crawfish tube off the rocks around the dam for a bit, with no hits, but on my third stop along the dam, Pam and I caught some decent Smallmouth to around 2lbs. We were both tossing a green/pumpkin Arkie spider jig twin tail on a 3/8 oz. football jighead to the top of a shallow reef near shore and retrieving it back slowly. The pick ups were light and spongy and it seemed to help by smearing Smelly Jelly Crawfish scent on the lure, All the fish appeared to be females of which all were released..Going up to Banks later this week for crappie. Crankster. The crappie are going to spawn soon, so I reccomend trying at the inlet bay at Steamboat Rock State park thats just around the corner from the boat launch. Also, the Bridge just across from the park has crappie in and around the pylons under the bridge. I do really well on red/silver sparkle skirt jigs, as well as Gulp 2 1/2" minnows on realistic jigheads. Another good spot is up along the Causeway at Ozborne Bay. If you have a boat, hit the bays on the far eastern side of the south bay. For on the spot info, go check out Dave Altier at Coulee City Playland in Electric City, there's an awesome tackle shop there! The Jimiester.
