At about ten AM my kids had gone into a sugar coma and I was given the green light to go fishing.
I arrived at the lake about 11. I had my lucky black and silver Roostertail still tied on from the night's hunting at Spanaway. I circled the entire lake and ended up getting only one hit near the stream exit grate. Most folks were either doing the powerbait thing, or hanging a worm under a bobber with seemingly limited effect. I returned to the exit grate and tied on a 1/80 oz. yellow and white ice jig(the tube kind) with one of them small round foam bobbers that are weighted. I like to think outside the box sometimes. I lost count at about 15 I think, and all within the first two hours... all lip hooked. They were just smallish stockers but they fought with all thier might, often clearing the water multiple times before having the barbless hook removed. At about 5 PM the rain had thoroughly soaked through and the cold was becoming unbearable, so I decided to tip the jig with an artificial maggot to try and get my limit quickly.
It worked.
Not only did the stockers truly enjoy the addition, but the 'trips liked them too and my last two fish were between 3 and 4 lbs. I don't think I could really convey in words, the excitement and thrill of hooking all these fish on my little ultra-light. The memory of this day will rest alongside my first steelhead and my first dry-fly caught fish. Truly an amazing day.
