Took out the new boat today and tried some cutthroat fishing. No luck. Fished around Juanita and Hunts points trolling firecracker herring with 2 and 3 oz weights. Heard these fish are shy so I used 12ft of 8lb fluorocarbon leader. No downriggers yet but I noticed the several boats that were out... everybody had downriggers. Are downriggers a must for cutthroat fishing or was I just not on the fish? New to the cutthroat thing.

You definately do not need downriggers. Many times of the year the fish will be in the top 20 feet of surface. Just last week we hooked a nice rainbow that was about 3 inches down from the surface. Use 2 oz now and go up to 5 ounces later on in the summer. Also go in and out of gear, like motoor mooching.
Leaded line from 4 - 7 colors out works extremely well as well. Downriggers work well, especvially for trout in the 55 foot range and definately with Sockeye.
Wait for the water to warm up another 5 degrees and fish the way you are in 35-60 feet of water along the bouy line. You'll do well!

Hey thanks for the post. New style of fishing like I said in the report so until I put something in the boat I have that uneasy feeling like I may be wasting my time if I'm not doing something right. I'll keep at it.
