Fished from 3:00 pm till 9:00 pm on this unique, deep lake a few miles north of Newport for the second time in a week. We started targeting Macks with a 1 oz white glow jig tipped with a 3'' black gulp minnow ( to add contrast ) and smeard with crawdad smelly jelly. On our first trip up here I caught one 3.5 lb Burbot (freshwater ling cod) in about 60ft of water. In my opinion the best eating freshwater fish there is. So me and two buddies decided to do it again yesterday and yesterday the first 2.5 hrs not a thing. We moved into deeper water about 80', 90' foot and as soon as I started bouncing of the bottom boom a 6lb ling. Then just before dark in the same hole I started to reel and a few feet up from the bottom I hooked a big mack. I played him for 15, min before I finally seen him and he was definitely in the higher teens or better. I struggled to get his head in a position through the ice and when I finally did he was to big to pull through the 6'' auger hole. He broke of when I tried pulling through and my glove some how gripped the line. So if you go bring and 8'' auger! We did leave at 9:00 pm when the wind picked up to a blustery cold snow blowing misery. We left with 11 lings ranging from 2.5 to 8 lbs. Fish fry tonight and again bring a 8'' auger.

Sounds like a blast. Is it along walk to get on the lake? Or can you park relatively close?

Rozman, it is a bit of a walk from the public lauch because they have the gate closed. There is a residential launch about half way up the road from the public launch to where the road leaves the lake, if you can get permission from a resident to walk through there it makes a much easier and closer walk.

Wow, sounds like an awesome day on the Ice! Too bad about the big Mack. I agree with you Burbot are the best. Thanks for the report.
