Got launched at about 7:30 this morning, targeting smallies. We first tried to fish the sunken forest at the west side of the lake, i was fishing a dropshot, and my dad and bro were using grubs. We had no idea how to fish it, what kind of bass it held (lmb's or smb's) or anything. Only tried for about 20 minutes with no hits, then went further north.
I switched from a dropshot to a yamamoto grub, and caught a bunch of perch. It seemed like the perch hit any color, any size, pretty much anything. They got pretty annoying, so we went out to about 30ft of water, and tried again. Less perch, but still enough to bug me . I was using a really light jig head with the grub, so i put on a couple split shots in front of it to get to the bottom. Still caught perch. Then i finally figured out how to get the perch to stop hitting, i put the same weight jig on, but with a much bigger hook, and just bounced it off the bottom slowly. I finally hooked a smallie. Then caught a few more perch, and about 20 minutes later, got another one. This one was a little bigger. I'm terrible at guessing weights so i wont try lol.
Had to leave at about 10:30 so i could get ready for football practice. I was the only one on the boat to catch a smallie. We left with about 25 perch with none under 9inches, but the whole boat probably caught 60 or 70. My brother caught a HUGE perch, it was about 13.5 inches. We had to throw it back though because it had a big sore on it. Ill post a pic of it in the freshwater fishing forum in the "Fishing pictures" thread if anyone wants to see it. The pic in the net is the bigger bass.
And they were both released.
