Bounced my way up Forest Service Road 21 to Chambers to check how the lake was this year. Got a late start and lost a kidney and several bolts on the awful washboard drive to the lake. (Will access from Randle next time instead of from Packwood).... anyway,...found several folks camped at the lake. One guy was slow drifting a fly around the lake without any action. Some brookies swatting the surface chasing damsels or emerging nymphs of some sort (maybe caddis). Followed many rises with a pass by the spinner but knew before I cast that I was just getting exercise as they had no interest in what I was using. Tried a stealth bobber with a nib of worm (no weight just letting it sink on 2 lb test). But nothing but one fish that hit my bobber by mistake. Packed it up and headed out to explore the Upper Cispus and pick some wild strawberries before driving up to Walupt to check things out.
Love this little jewel of a lake and have fished it since the 70's (gawd I am getting old). Can get some nice brookies from here and an occasional golden. But not this time. Next week I will return to fish some carey specials along the shallows.
