Hit Alder at 7 in the morn. The boat wasn't in the water till 8ish so I tried fishing bass from the shore. Turns out there were about 5 LMB just swimming around a log about 4 feet off the shore. I threw out my Bill Dance Dancing Eel and they turned their noses and didn't even attempt to bite. So I tried with my Booyah Boogie Bait and still no avail. Only had 2 poles so I tied a weightless senko and wacky rigged it, but by the time i finished tying my knots the bass decided to fool other fisherman elsewhere. I tried fishing with spinner and buzz baits along the same shoreline, but the fish just disappeared.

Once we got the boat into the water we trolled wedding rings (pink and green) tipped with night crawlers 50 ft down over by the dam. About 1 hour into trolling with not one bite tried, we switched over to weighted Luhr Jenson Krocodile trolling spoons. Only a nibble and a missed set, but still no trout or kokanee. Just for laughs, father-in-law thought he hooked a huge fish and after reeling it in turned out to be a large branch that sank in the water. Shoulda seen the look on his face!

We're planning another visit to Alder next week. Any pointers or hot spots to check out for trout and kokes?

Perhaps you are fishing too deep? Trout look up and if you bait is below them you will never catch one.

That makes sense, but the day was incredibly hot and we were actually informed by other anglers to fish wedding rings 50 feet down. They also told us the lake was recently stocked with kokes, but couldn't confirm that. We didn't have a depth finder, but my guess is that around the dam on the NNW part of the lake, the water must have been anywhere between 75 and 100 feet deep. Can anyone confirm?

Try up in the river channel above the log boon. I've always had luck with the kokes there. I use downriggers with the mack flask lite and a red wedding ring. I tip the hook with maggots. I've never had to go down 50 ft most times 20 to 30 ft works. mark the fish on a fish finder and set your rigs 3 to 4ft above the school.

The dam area is well over 200 ft deep and river channel in places is 150 ft Alder is a deep lake the reason you don't have to fish so deep in the lake is it never really warms up. You have ice pack only 30 to 40 river miles up river, and no other dams. The water temp is not a factor .

Nice! Thanks for the comments. I'll be sure to keep them in mind for this coming weekend.
