I fish Deer Lake quite often for the Lake Trout(Mackinaws). In the early morning when they are still hunting I use a flutter spoon with 8 colors of 18lb. lead line and 50' of 10lb mono. This works until the skiers come out. Sometimes I have my limit by then. If not, I will head for the bottom either using a downrigger set up or a 3oz bottom walker still using the flutter spoons. A "Laker Taker" in silver with a green or white lightning bolt is what I use on the lead. A "Sutton" spoon in 1/4oz and 3" long is what I use on the bottom. The big trick is going slow. 1 mph to 1.2mph seems to be the ticket. Every now and then you need to speed it up, as the fish will follow your spoon for a long ways. When you give it a boost, they will strike. I catch a lot of small ones with the occasional 6 to 10lber thrown in. As they are trying to eliminate the Macks, you should keep them all. The bigger ones smoke up real nice and the smaller ones are good on the BBQ. Happy Trolling...
