Water level at the State boat ramp was very low. My boat barely floated off the trailer. Water was too shallow to use main motor; trolling motor was held partially out of the water to power me to the deeper water. This channel needs to be dredged to make it safe for boaters. First stop was an immediate left to find 15-20 feet of water. Using a Carolina rig with a brown Powerbait worm, I caught and released to nice smallmouth bass. Fished this area until 7:30 and then headed to the Narrows. Cruised into the first cove on the right side with the bullrushes and dollar pads. Again in 15 feet of water, caught and released two smallmouths; one was about 3 pounds. Fished this cove for another hour with no other strikes. While fishing out of the Narrows along the east side, I saw a pontoon boat troller catch a huge Mackinaw trout; probably at least 10 pounds. He didn't appear to be using either leaded line or downriggers. The fish barely fit into his partner's net. I finished the day picking up three more smallmouths that were smaller than the first four. Where are all the largemouth bass?
