So I ventured out to Coffin Lake again to try my hand at what it holds. As indicated in my previous entry I'd made a trip out there a month or so ago and had fished from shore with no luck whatsoever. This time though I packed my float tube and started working the shore areas with a rooster tail. I had no luck with that approach and since I'd read in other entries that other lakes on the Little Pend Oreille river had bass in them, I decided to try a rubber worm set up as outlined in the fishing techniques section of this web page. I must say I had little faith, but that quickly disappeared when I landed a nice large mouth, about 14 inches. I've never caught a bass before in my life and had, until then, never fished for them either. The lake description never mentions bass as being present, but believe me they are there. I ended up catching 3 nice large mouths, all in the same size range, and losing several others, all on a dark red plastic worm with red sparkles set up as mentioned in fishing techniques. There were a lot of other fish rising, so before leaving I used a bobber baited with worm to try and find out what they were. I was surprised again when the first thing landed was a brook trout, about 8 inches. The second thing I brought in was a small perch. I caught several more of each of these on the worm setup before leaving. I should note that the weeds have grown up considerably on the lake and really the only effective way of fishing it I think is from the water in a raft or tube or something. Still can't believe the difference a month makes in how responsive the fish are.
