So when is catching only 1 fish a satisfying day of fishing? When you haven't been fishing for 4 months and the fish is a big one. I finally got a day free to go fishing and headed out to Amber this morning. When I arrived, about a dozen fish were cruising in shallows at the boat ramp with several rising to midges. I cast my fly out a few times but decided that I would explore the lake and then come back to the boat ramp if I got skunked. Mistake! I should have stayed put. The lake was fishing tough today and I had one brief hookup trolling a wooly bugger on a full sink line. I tried multiple patterns and locations but couldn't raise a fish. Other fisherman on the lake reported the same. I headed back to the boat launch to target the cruising fish and by my 6th cast was into a big fish. A healthy 20 inch rainbow pounced on my red bead head brassie and put a nice bend in my 3 wt. for several minutes. This is the biggest fish I have caught in Amber in about 6 years!
so I was pleased to see a fat fish like that come out of the lake after the troubles it has had the last few years. Overall a great day and I can't wait to get back out on the water
