It was my day off, so I decided I would try a new fishing destination. I headed to Ellensburg and fished Woodhouse Loop Ponds. These ponds are pretty easy to find, and several of them are right along woodhouse loop road. See the attached map I made. I focused on the four ponds that are the furthest south on the attached map. I circled the ponds in red. To reach the ponds I fished today, you take a right onto Woodhouse Loop Road off of canyon road, as you are headed to ellensburg. The ponds are approximately a mile or two from the turn off. There is a dirt road that takes off to the left where you can park your car. From this dirt road, there is a trail that takes you into three of the ponds that cannot be accessed directly off of the road.
It was a very cool and windy day in Ellensburg (typical spring weather for Ellensburg). I tried a variety of lures including different sized and color grubs and jigs, and through some rapalas out as well. The largest fish I caught (the one attached) was about a ten or eleven inch largemouth that I took from the pond that is the furthest south and west on the map I attached. It is also by far the smallest of the ponds. With a fair amount of weight, a person could probably cast from one side and hit the other. As I walked into the ponds this morning, a very large fish made a huge splash along the bank of this pond. Despite its size, this pond had ample coverage for bass. Surprisingly, the bottom was not very weedy, but there were lilly pads growing in a few places (a bass haven). The second bass I caught was probably only six inches. My grub was nearly as big as the fish. I caught this fish from the pond that is the furthest south and to the east on my attached map. The two fish I caught hit a three inch white grub on a black jig head and were safely released.
I think in total there are a total of eight of these ponds, but I only fished three today. The ponds to the north of the map I will fish another day. In talking with a wild life officer for Kittitas County, he said that there are some hogs located in these ponds. As I said before, it was a cold and windy day, and we have not had much for warm weather this year yet, so hopefully some good weather will speed up the action in these ponds soon! I took several pictures of the various ponds that consist of "woodhouse loop ponds" and am waiting on Mike Carey to post these under the lake description, so keep in touch, there should be some updated pictures of these ponds coming soon.
