We started out like many others there for the Derby, about 12:30 AM. Cold and just enough boats on the water to make it interesting to get around. After a couple hours and no bites we went in for breakfast, a nap and to get warm. Back on the lake at 5:30 AM dragging a worm behind a mini willow leaf. It didn't take long and we had our first fish on. For the next couple hours we had several hits but only managed to boat two more. All were in the 10 inch range, but lots of fight. Around 8:30 I hooked into Moby Whale....... a whopping 30oz, 16.5 inches at the official weigh in station. I Changed to barb-less hook spinners of various colors and types and my brother-in-law was using flies on both floating and sinking line. By the time we had enough fun for the day we had caught 8 fish altogether and released another 6 or 8.
Had a great time and finished 10th place in the Lake Wilderness Derby.
Next year we are camping at home and getting on the lake around 6:00 AM.
