Have to work all weekend and will very angrily miss the opener, but what can you do, quit?? Anyway, had my "opener" today on clear. Hit it about 2:30-5:30pm. My buddy and I trolled around the north side of the lake to the west side. About 1.4 mph. I used a small rapala (hot mustard, it's new) and he also had a small rap, blue. Nada on the first pass.
I switched to a brass/chartreuse dick nite and added some weight. He stuck with the blue rapala. I had fish on on the second pass, he handed me the net and he got one on while I was still fighting mine, sweet, a double!! Not so fast, I netted my own then went to net his, and I messed up big time and his fish got off boatside. Man I felt terrible. Both trips. Had about three more on and they all shook off. Darn.
About 5:00pm my buddy nails another one on the blue rap, and I promptly hand HIM the net. As soon as it's in the net, I get fish on! Another double, this time BOTH were landed. So three trips, and about five lost. Other guys had about the same luck....one or two in the boat, but many more lost. Man they were fighting hard today. It seemed like anything would catch them, as long as you put it in front of them. If you go, stick to the north shore in about 8ft. to the east of the public launch, you're sure to see SOME action. Water was 50-51*. Good luck to all on the opener, and bring the kids with!!

Those are some nice fish! About how big do you think they were?

they were standard triploids ja-lange, i didn't weigh or measure, but i'd say 15-16 inches and about 1.5 lbs. they look bigger because that is a Little Nickle paper, not a regular newspaper. although i'll have to remember that trick in the future......

No worries. My opening days are now spent at Lake Cushman and Riffe. You have most of the lakes to yourself.

Nice Job Rolland, I'll be at McMurray on the opener, but I might have to hit Clear on the way back!

I'm pretty sure you'll get a limit at McMurray Rob G. But if for some reason you do go to clear, there are two long white docks about 100-150 yards apart on the north/northeast shore. the trips are still pretty much schooled up there.....
