Fished from 3:30pm to 8pm and landed 4 squaw fish. I imagine a few weeks of 50+ degree weather will make the small mouth active again. Still, I had a bet with my friend that whoever caught the 1st fish the other person had to give it a kiss - I've never been so excited about catching a squaw fish before! To see him pucker-up to that nasty thing was priceless! (I'll post a pick of it later). I guess he's been sick since the day after we went fishing - who knew you could catch an STD from a fish?! HA!
Anyway, I'm hoping all of you out there who like to fish the Long Lake and Spokane Lake areas are doing your part to help lower the squaw fish population. They destroy basically every other native fish species in the area so it's important to help keep their numbers down - they reproduce like rabbits. I generally knock them out or cut their head off and toss them back in the water - you get quite a good show from the Bald Eagles in the area when you do that! And at this time of the year they can use all the help they can get to help feed their offspring. Also, now is an EXCELLENT time to help clean up some of the trash and litter that seems to gather around the edges of the lake. I always bring an extra trash bag to pick up some of the garbage floating on the lake or on the bank. IT ONLY TAKES A FEW MINUTES AND IT HELPS SAVE FISH/BIRDS AND OTHER ANIMALS WHO EAT THE TRASH AND DIE FROM IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP KEEP OUR NATURAL AREAS CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
