Started fishing and fighting the wind at 9am! Wind was hard out of the South, white caps, the whole deal...
Tried fishing jigs for a bit, then tried dragging power worms on the bottom with the wind...had one nibble, so I decided to change tactics a bit. Switched to a Texas-rigged pumpkin colored power worm 7" with a 3/8 ounce bullet style weight. Casting INTO the wind and twitching it back along docks and logs fishing no shallower that 5ft.
Hooked first fish on third cast! Was using 8lb test, and it was a big fish, fought her for a bit trying to tire her out, about 5' from the boat she jumped and threw the hook....grrr!!! I would say easily over 6lbs!! About ten casts later, had another one grab it and snap my line on the hookset (must have had a weak spot)!! Switched the entire rig over to my baitcast gear and 17lb test, and got my revenge!!
Next bass was 2.9lbs weighed and released........then 3.3lbs weighed and released.....and the one in the photo 5.3lbs also weighed and released!! I WIN!! That's 3-2 and I'll take it!!
Weather was o.k., but the wind was horrible! Keys were casting INTO the wind....keeping rod tip low once the lure hit the water to keep the wind from catching your line and blowing your bait back towards you.....twitching the worm slowly without lifting it off the bottom.....wood structure in 7-9ft of water....and 67+ degree water! Cruise around until you find the right water temp!!
Heading back tomorrow, hope the wind lets up by then!!
nice work on those bass.....they are finally starting to move around it sounds like. was the water really 67 degrees?? maybe it was just that warm under YOUR boat because you were on fire...
Great report, well detailed, and nice fish for sure. At least someone is having some success. I fished Cassidy last week for trout, just days after the big plant and had no action in two hours of trolling a variety of lures and gear. I think the water temp is still too cold for trout. Thanks for the report.
good job on nailing those bass, i been thinking about heading down to skagit county for some bass fishing any tips you would like to give would be very helpful.
WHOA!!! BIG TIME TYPO!!! Sorry guys the water temp was 47 degrees NOT 67 degrees.....OOOOOPS!!!!! Musta got happy fingers while typing? Sorry!
Nope, I did't measure the fish, never do, I like to weigh them and get them back in as quick as possible!
As far as tips?? Fish sloooow, look for the warmest water, try green and brown lures.....beyond that.....just get on the water!! I tried about six different rigs before hitting on the one I used, also tried five different color combo's! If you like fishing docks, hit Big Lake, logs and pilings try Clear Lake, if it gets warm this week you could even try spinnerbaits on little Beaver Lake which is right in between both of them??
Thanks for the comments....sorry again for the typo!! I WISH it was 67 degree water!!!
