On the lake at 3:00 PM. The 20 to 30 MPH winds today accomplished "ice out " for 80% of the lake. When I started fishing there was ten feet of ice shrads in the water in front of the dock at the the launch site. This condition also exixisted 100 yards down the north shore to the west. the wind kept moving this body of ice up the shore to the east all the time I was there and it all went by the launch site by 4:40 PM.
I caught my first 18" Brown Trout at 3:50, my 2nd at 4:05, my 3rd at 4:22, and my 4th at 4:36 and a 16" brown at 5:04.
I looked at my watch as I released each fish, so I know the time of each catch.
These fish were beautiful with a yellowish tinge on their silver sides between their spots, and all were fat and sassy fighters. Think I'll go back tommorow as I don't have to be at work until 3:00PM.

If this is actually Liberty Lake in Spokane County that you were fishing you should know that it is currently not open for fishing. This lake does not open until the last saturday in April and closed last September 30th. Good luck next time and hope you don't get caught. Just to remind everyone else you should check the REGULATIONS!!!

Actually fishinlegend, this is the first year of new regulations for Liberty Lake. Liberty, Downs, and another Spokane county lake that I can't think of have opened on March 1st of this year. Because they don't publish the reg's till before opening day it's hard to know, but those are the rewards when you 'check the regulations.'. This will be the new season on these lakes in the future.

Thanks for the ice report and good luck with those browns Phil!

ProHawk is right, WDFW revised opening dates for Liberty, Downs, & Medical Lakes effective March 1st this year, From the emergency change page off the WDFW website, "The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission has approved a regulation change beginning May 1, 2008 to change the opening date for these lakes from the last Saturday in April to March 1. To make the March opening date effective this year, the director of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife approved an emergency order bridging the period between March 1 and May 1."

If you want WDFW updates "live" (so to speak) you can visit their website and opt for email updates to any regulation changes. I like this option much better than reading the paper. :-)

Nice report Phil!
