Went out this morning about 10:30 still trying to catch one of Rutt's big Cutthroat. Tried the same setup, Jack Lloyd pop gear in brass with big orange Wedding ring and Nightcrawler. No success on sw side of Mercer Island after about an hour so I headed back to the Cedar river mouth where I picked up a nice 13 inch rainbow (which made a very tasty dinner). It was getting close to game time so I started trolling North back towards Rainier Beach when I got a monster strike. When I finally got it to the boat it turned out to be another Salmon just like last Saturday. I didn't net this one but I got a couple of pictures before releasing it. I wish the Seahawks had been able to beat Green Bay, but still a great day! God bless, Ken (kokenny)

A really neat fish indeed.

For positive species identification please see WDFW.WA.GOV/outreach/fishing/t&sid.pdf Published June 1995. General rule, 12 or fewer rays on the anal fin is a trout. or char or Atlantic Salmon. 13 or more is a Pacific salmon. King (15-19). Silver however is 12-17, as noted in silver picture #1. The regs only note that an Atlantic salmon is 8-12 (as is a steelhead/rainbow). Somewhere in my 72 of fishing experience I was taught the anal fin id was the surefire way.

The regs should include this info, preferably with the salmon and trout in color on the same page for easier comparison. I doubt, though, that the game warden on Lk Wa is compassionate enough to accept the incomplete fishing regs as an excuse. But it can be confusing as we saw earlier.
