just another fine day at Rufus Woods!! After getting past the hard part, launching the boat, as the launch was very icy. We had a great day on the water, didn't catch as many as we usually do, we have been catching around a hundred fish a day between the two of us, today we only caught 67, but the size of the fish we were catching more than made up for it. the two pics included gives you an idea of the quality of these fish that can be caught. We left the lake with our 4 fish limit that weighed in for a total of 43.4 lbs for 4, yes, only 4 fish!!
We were casting to the shorelines around rocks and dropoffs where the current was sweeping off of flats. this seemed to be where the larger trout were holding. What a day though, we had to throw back several 8 lbs plus trout because we had bigger in the live well!!
We were using spinners in the black and/or purple seemed to be the color that really triggered strikes. Color is very important, first thing in the morning we fish with different colors, all will attract the fish but only a few certain colors will actually make the fish strike. when we have a color that puts fish on the line instead of just seeing them folow the lures in, then we know we are on the right color for the day and go to that color spinner.
we have tried different things like spoons, flatfish, plugs, deep divers but the spinners seem to always be by far the best bait. we cut the hooks down to one and fish it weedless to make releasing the fish easy and safe for the fish. We actually tend to get more hookups and never had a problem with loosing fish due to fishing barbless.
the weather was chilly, but not all that bad, a few t-shirts and a flannel was good enough for me for the day. there was very little wind, which is nice when its cold out and the sun was nice and warm....untill the end of the day when it was getting low in the sky.
