I took my son to Coldwater Lake to see if the fish would be active this late in the season. We got kind of a late start but managed to get to the lake by mid-afternoon. The water temperature was 60 degrees and the weather was overcast with some sun breaks, a bit on the windy side at times. It took about 45 minutes for the first fish to strike, a very nice 16-17 inch rainbow that was beginning to show some spawn color. I'm glad that it hit my son's rod because it was the nicest fish of the day. For the next 3 hours we fished all over the lake and managed to land about 2 or 3 other fish, mostly in the 11-13 inch range.
I don't think I will be back this late in the year again. The expense of traveling there, plus the lack of steady fishing action made it a bit disappointing, especially since my son came with me. He doesn't enjoy fishing as much as I do so when I take him with me I like to see him catching fish after fish.
There were only two or three other boats on the lake, and from talking with the others it doesn't sound like they did any better. I suspect it probably wasn't any better earlier in the day since there is usually a lot more pressure on a Saturday when the fishing is good. Oh well, hopefully next spring things will pick up again.
Tight lines everybody!
