Fished for Tigers on Sat morning. Had one strike at boat side from a OK fish but it did not take the whole lure. It was not as aggressive as the ones that are 100% ready to feed. Boated a nice fish last weekend from this same spot. That fish was released. I also have seen a few fish lately that swim around for a minute with there head out of the water. I have heard of them doing that at Hauser lake but this is the first year I have seen it for myself. Pretty cool. Better luck next time. That is Musky fishing.

About the swimming with the top of their head out of the water... Not sure why they do it, but have talked to people from mayfield who told me they have been swimming and VERY startled by this "alligator" looking thing swimming at them. Friend told me that he had a muskie follow him around when he was swimming in shallow water there. He figured it was waiting for him to jump fish out of the weeds. Anybody know why the muskies do that?

Couple of theories:

* Since muskellunge attack prey from the side and then swallow them head-first, the musky might bet taking one last gulp associated with consumption of a large meal.
* Musky like to be well acquainted with their surroundings and are surfacing to get a "better look around."

Whatever the reason, it is pretty cool to see. Gets the blood pumping that's for sure.

One guy from back east said the most common theory back there is the musky is trying to adjust it's swim bladder. It is pretty sweet though, and I've seen them out at Hauser doing this too. Maybe these fish have seen Jaws?

I posted a video on you tube called "Head-up Tiger Muskie". Check it out and see if it looks similar to what you saw.
