I decided to try out Campbell Lake over the 4th of July weekend. It is located about 6 miles outside of Winthrop. There are no signs to direct your course to get to the lake. A good detailed map will help, along with some luck. Campbell is a small lake nestled in between some rolling hills. If you don't have a float tube it will be a tough outing. The shoreline is very muddy and then you have about 15 yards of shallow weeds to get through to reach the deeper water. It also does not have much of a launch for a boat. It is perfect spot for a fly fisherman with a float tube! Both days that I fished I got out on the lake between 2:00 and 3:00pm. The lake must have been recently stocked because the fish were attacking almost any fly I though at them. Most of the fish were in the 10-12 inch range. For the most part I just trolled real slow with my sinking line and both days I caught over 10 fish in 2 hours time. (Oh yeah, the lake is catch and release only!) It is a great place to spend an afternoon.
