I decided to go to Fan Lake today because the temperature was gong to be in the upper 90's and I wanted to go somewhere with some cover and shade.
Got to the launch at about 7:00 am and in the water a few minutes later.
The surface water temp was 74 degrees, but it was 67 at 15 to 20 feet. The fish finder was showing the fish at that level as well. I began with the tried and true Olive Willie ( size 10) and my 24' type VI sink tip line. After catching two perch about the same size as my fly I caught a 14" Rainbow. The next hour or so produced several more strikes and fish. I was concentrating on the deep section of the lake at the channel to the upper portion of the lake. There is a pretty good drop off there where the fish seem to hang out this time of year.
I landed 6 Rainbows hooked a couple more and got one fly bitten off in 2 hours on the lake. All fish seemed to be this year's plants and were in the 12 to 14" range. I did have one much larger fish on (16" or larger) but he got loose a few feet from the net. The Olive Willie worked so well I used it all day.
I left as the kids at Camp Reed began to stir and start their activities. Also it was getting pretty hot!
For this time of year the lake fished like I expected.
