I have fished this lake only once before. I received some good advise there from a regular. This time I was equiped with the "secret" fly (a midge larvae pattern).
I wasn't fishing it correctly ( I had no anchor, and it was windy, so I fished the pattern too fast as I drifted with the wind) and had no strikes all day! I switched patterns a couple times to no avail. The trout would not take anything that was moving faster than a snail I was told by another pair of regulars. They were cleaning up with numerous 'bows up to 19". Towards sunset the wind died down. That's when I was able to fish my fly properly, Dead slow and just a foot or so off the bottom. 2 feet under the surface worked also and I started getting strikes. I hooked into a nice 17 incher (verified with a tape) and landed it after an exciting fight of about 10-15 minutes (my guess). I was using a light tippet (7x) so I didn't want to break the leader by getting too anxious. The fish did not want to come to the surface and kept barreling down to the bottom. It never jumped though. Well, that made the day! Good luck to all!
