Went over to Potholes Fri, Sat & sun with my 7y.o. son. Wanted to catch some walleye, but my son has no patience for trolling. Plus the only people who I talked to that had any success were going out at 3:30am to about 6:00 am. My son wanted no part of that, so it was on to plan B, smallmouths. If you can't catch smallies on potholes at the first of June, then you just aren't trying. Even the people fishing on the dock at Mardon were catching stringers full of smallies. We had our best success out around Goose Island. Over the course of three days fishing we caught 4 over 20 inches, 5 over 15 inches, and countless between 8 and 14 inches. It was my sons best fishing trip ever. It was the kind of trip every father wants for their kids. It can be frustrating trying to get your kids into fishing when the fish won't cooperate. The fish gods smiled on us this weekend. All fish were caught on 4" smoke / purple flake senko's slowly twitched across the bottom in 2 to 6 or7 feet of water. It seemed like the bigger fish were hanging in the deeper water around big boulders surrounded by weeds. I wish I had some pic's to post but we recently moved and the camera has yet to be found. If I would have been able to catch a walleye or two I would have given the weekend a five rating. Tight lines...take a kid fishing.
