Went to the Ship canal on the UW side. Got there about 6:30am. Started near the east end of the concrete walkway throwing a Mepps. Fished that down to the University Bridge with no bites. Switched to a dropshot worm setup with a 4" light green worm. First time I had fished this way. Worked all the way back with no bites then hung a 3 pounder just off the east end at the bottom of the stairway. She put up a great fight! Put her back and tried for more but she was it. My first Lake Washington Smallmouth! Stopped at Magnuson Park on the way back. Tossed a texas rigged worm but no bites. All in all a fun morning.

great report john.
Glad you hooked up into one! I've been hearing good things about this ship canal area. I haven't been around there yet.
I've tried fishing portage bay area before though. How do you get to that shore spot you are talking about? (concrete walkway?)
Is there a road or street that leads to it? If you don't want to reveal it, i totally understand. Tight lines.

I drove into the UW right by Husky stadium and parked by a climbing wall that is just west of the building where you can rent canoes. There is a walking trail that parallels the water and if you head west you will come to a stairway that takes you down to the walkway by the water. You are fishing over a railing but it was not really a problem. Hope this helps.
