Since there's not a section for non-Washington lake reports, I thought I'd type one up and stick it here.
As I said before, I had the opportunity to do a little bit of fishing in Waterton Park, which is the Canadian side to Glacier National Park. Waterton has a bunch of lakes and rivers that you can fish in. However, they have enacted strict rules to protect the natural species. One of which is the Bull Trout. They no longer plant their lakes to help the natural species recover. Here's a bit more information on the park. Here's where you can get a pamphlet on the rules (this is just some of them, no idea where to get the rest).
One thing that's a bit different in Alberta (and likely all of Canada) than the US is that if you want to fish in the parks, you have to get a park fishing permit. So, even if you have an Alberta fishing license, you need to get one for the park.
The lake I fished at was Crandell lake. Nice smallish lake, about the size of Blackmans lake in Snohomish. It's smack in the middle of the park (as by this map). The trailhead is on the road to Cameron lake (which supposedly is another good fishing lake). It's 1.2km (or .7 miles) and is an easy hike. A little up and down, but nothing too steep. The lake (and all of the waters there) are crystal clear and cool.
We first tried several different spinners: Brass Rooster Tail with a redish tail, Silver and white spinner with white tail. Then, I tied on this black spinner fly (kind of like these ones, but much smaller blade). Attached a weight to the line and found a point to fish from. 2nd cast from the point, bam. Reeled in a nice Brook Trout, about 11 inches. Released him safely. After that, nothing. Although, the people across the lake weren't so quiet about their catches. Didn't make it across to find out what they were using.
In any case, I'd consider it a successful outing. Unknown lake in an unknown area with lot's of restrictions. I'll be trying to go again when we go up to visit again. Perhaps I can make it an all day thing.
