Resident fish and shellfish in the Lower Duwamish Waterway are so contaminated by PCBs, the state Health Department advises there is no safe amount to eat — yet people keep right on fishing.

I would be interested to know more information about this assertion. I assume this is in regards to resident Lower Duwamish fish species, such as flounders and sculpins which I doubt anyone really fishes for... However I am curious to what degree this would impact rearing juvenille salmonids, and also to what degree "Shellfish" are impacted.

It is too vague to really have much foundation. My guess, though, is these effect would persist even into the marine nearshore surrounding the mouth of the river as well....

Yea I don't believe too many people actually fish for and eat any resident fish out of the Duwamish~ most are fishing for migratory salmon who just recently came out of salt water. Good point on the smolt but most come from the hatchery which probably isn't affected too much by the pollution. Not sure how far up the pinks spawn but hopefully far enough up river to be out of the hazardous zone!
