Fuel leaks tohatsu/Nissan gas tanks

Post by Bob R » Thu Sep 13, 2012 10:23 pm

Went to fill tank after changing oil on our 4 hp, 4 stroke 6 or 7 year old tohatsu this evening, zero problems but when screwing on gas cap noticed gas forced out of hairine leak around nipple fitting right under cap. It seems that the nipple and surrounding square of material are made separatly from rest of tank and somehow is coming loose, miracle to have discovered it now instead of running full out with a hot engine and an internal fuel leak.New tank will cost at least $70 or $80. Please check all similer fittings as potential disasters could occur, Nissan uses same materials , I believe. Our weekend plans are T.U. now, better luck to the rest of you fishing. Bob R

If able with out interfering with work ability drain out gas clean area with rubbing alcohol or acetone and use J-B weld for a quick patch util your new tnk comes in. They also make a 2 part putty sold at boat places for patch jobs that work for water leaks and some fuel leaks. You will need to scratch up the surface like you do a tube patch.

Well, picked up a new tank at Sorenson's Marine in White center, they have the largest supply of Tohatsu parts on shelves of anywhere around, also props to Eastside in Issaquah, they didn't have the part but were happy to direct me to Sorenson's.Installation went well, took the opportunity to replace fuel filter as it is under the fuel tank.We WILL fish today and tomorrow,(tomorrow is opening day on the Chehalis!) and will post reports. Funny thing, had the same thing happen with my tohatsu gas tank. It got a leak in the exact same spot. I was out running errands, one of which was to fill up the gas tank for the boat. I filled it up, and then I was at ted's sports center for a while shopping, and left the full tank in the hot car. Long story short, I just had a trunk full of gasoline.

I noticed mine when screwing gas cap on with vent closed and full of gas, it seems that positive pressure weakens the plastic welds, more fuel, less fumes to expand, always fill if in hot car, get new tank as it seems to be a better system on tne new tanks. Bob R
