Is this any good for the price for a starter pole and which rod model would be best?

50% off is a good price. The rod is moderate action, which is pretty slow. However, if you want to fish small streams and lakes, it would probably be worth the money. If you want it for fishing big rivers where you are going for distance and fighting wind, it may not be that good. A 5 weight rod is the all around rod. The 9' rod would be better.

They are most likely discontinuing the rod, so they are discounting it heavily.
