nice fish, been to cook once just to look and it looked like a fun place to fish to complement to the quantity of fish as well, it would have been fun to throw in a pink worm, any parts of it where you do not need a guide also what do you guys use on it, bobber and jig?

We fished eggs under a bobber mostly but I caught that on good ol fashioned drift gear. Flouresent red corkie and eggs. I tried a worm both on the bottom and under a float and couldn't get bit. Really wanted to throw some spoons as I usually do well on cook creek with a silver rivrfisher but conditions just wouldn't cooperate. As for the question of needing a guide, I think the whole.creek, at least the part that holds salmon and steelhead is within the reservation, I'm just spoiled though because my brother is not only a quinault, but worked as a stream surveyor for the fishery dept over there. And I just have to pay him in beer to go fishing

You should see the Cascade, There has been alot of people there lately...I wonder why?

Because fishing is becoming a much more popular sport year after year thats why, which is why every well known hatchery run is experiencing larger crowds every year, your way off track if you think the cascade is the only river getting more crowded just because of some internet posts.



On a side note, checked out a new river today, never been before, with the help of a few guys on the river on some spots to fish, ended up with 3 winter runs and 6 summer runs. Pics soon!

True, not like these hatcheries are some secret, wherever you find fish, you will find people, for example the salmon river, miles from any where but go there at the peak run, when its dialed in, and you better get there early if you want a parking spot.

haha did everyone get a new copy of the northwest sportsman cause they have an article about how a lot of terminal zones are reciving more pressure and the main example was the cascade, sayiing how the skagit used to get 20000 fish caught and cascade with a couple hundred but now the cascade almost got 1000 caught last year! wow too bad the skagit only got 150, that is less than the lyre which does not even get stocked anymore. Mainly people are fishing these terminal zones because the state stop stocking fish in various places and just at hatcheries causing fish to zip right to he hatchery instead of holding. Like I said reopen barnaby slough and all with be good...on the skagit atleast.
thanks spoonman I thought it was open above the fish wier at the base of it on the other side of the hatchery though and I have heard when they turn it off fish jump over it but I am not sure if that is true or not, good fish btw, can not really tell how big but it looks like 7 or 8lbs.
can't wait to go again but that might not be until christmas break

Bingo. Getting mad about crowded terminal fisheries is just ridiculous now days. Theres plenty of opportunities outside these fisheries, and if you wanna get away from the people you gotta go travel and explore. Btw nice steel spoonman. Keep the freakin pics coming!

Youre absolutely right brat bonker my dad always tells me about how on the sky they used to drop fish in woods creek, sultan eu er pilchuck etc... And the fish would be spread out all over. The pilchuck used to be my favorite river but I haven't even bothered with it for a couple years. Hopefullthe natives build back uplike they say it will. And I think my cousin guides on the res i can call him see what he charges if you want.

its no bigge spoonman I do not go over that part of 101 very much literally from humptulips to the bogachiel I have been there once but everywhere else I go haha, do you get to fish there for free cause if you do I am hella jelly man haha.
Another thing was in the magazine was even if we had a estimated run of 40000 natives to return they would more than likely not reopen it because it is up to NOAA I guess, this year it is forecasted at 4000 and I am talking about the skagit alone.
I hear you about the pilchuck, the lyre was one of my favorite even though I have only hooked 1 on there but something about it was cool, very little people and I guess good returns but no hatchery so no plants now which sucks.

yep, with all the plant programs we USE TO have around the state, there was MUCH more opportunities for people to spread out and catch steelhead. Well now... shutting down all the hatcheries and destroying the wild runs to nothing, well... we have the cascade, and reiter north of seattle, thats it... like theres no other successful plants where good numbers return, 2 places north of seatlle, and to make it worse its almost impossible to catch those fish in those rivers unless your within a 1/2 mile of the hatchery... with these circumstances, things are gonna be crowded, its sad really!

got the drift fish this river today, first trip out there! i dont get to drift fish much, it was super fun, all on eggs or shrimp, except one summer steelhead on a spoon, and some bonus coho on spoons as well, fun day!! we landed 6 summers and 2 winter run, and a bunch of coho. I tell ya man, some guys were discouraged at catching summers because they dont eat well this late in the year, but OMG i dont care, these summer run steelhead this late are literally the most beautiful steelhead ive ever seen in my life, look at the red cheek buck in the water, an amazing, beautiful steelhead. heres the pics! for the sake of crowd control, im gonna keep this river name to myself this time

nice job, quite a day of mix bags huh. i had a chance to do that at the hump this weekend but not only was it blown but we woke up really late to and only had a couple hours to fish not to mention clamming sucked haha oh well...
man what ever technique it is you flat out slay, gotta love drift fishing though.

Well got number 5 today and it is a personal best! 38.25 long and 19 around. Scale showed right at 18 pounds!! I was a bit worried getting this one in, as my leader was only 8# test. Fun battle
