oh really that was you haha, I actually gave that jig my friend since he does not have much steelhead gear, nice looking jig too, I was using mostly fish doctors this summer and fish seem to like them, can not wait for winter runs out there, only tred that river for summer runs and springers.

Re: today catch of da day
haha alright if I can figure out how to post pics or if I remember to bring my camera, I will swap some of my home made jigs and some of my coho spinners too. I have came up with pretty cool patterns with my jigs.

Re: today catch of da day
roger that slayer , my go to when they are finicky is a nice bead dropper off a jig. True I do believe presentation is key and color/size is secondary.OFFDAAHOOK wrote:hmm i got tons steel this year....lots on standard jigs had many few cast limits. i think color do matter but i think presentation is more important.ill try jig first to pick off da biters offdabat but if they finicky ill drift uv yarn and it usually will work right bonkers as you withnessed

ya i caught more steel from a cheap woreout red jig ,it barely had any feathers at all and da head paint was all peeled off . presentation is key and like yo say color is secondary which may be true ...but if you tie yo own jig it is more rewarding, way to go bonkers on you hantied jig show me yo creation nextime i see yo

+1 on tying your own jigs and it being more rewarding.... I do have a few dozen store bought jigs but 100's of my own I tie myself.....

Re: today catch of da day
yeah the only problem is that I do not use my homemades except for my basic nightmares but my home made coho spinners catch quilcene fish so easily, just need to find a nice deep hole with moving fish and WHAM fish on...

Re: today catch of da day
do you need a base of white first or just the color wanted for the jig?
Re: today catch of da day
I use Both pro-tec powder and vinyl jig paint.... The vinyl is quickly becoming my favorite due to once it goes on, it doesn't seem to want to chip off... I also color up egg weights and bait weights....

Re: today catch of da day
I paint & tie all my own jigs - I use only vinyl as it stands up to abuse (no chipping) much better than powder in my experience. I always put a white base on before color then a clear coat on top - The combination really brings out the desired color. the only thing I don't like about vinyl is after they are dried they tend take a week or so to cure (gas-out). In other words, if you dry em they are hard as nails and you can tie em up just fine, but if you stick em in a seal or semi-sealed container right away you will open the container later and smell the fumes. I aways keep my jigs in open topped containers until I take em to the river.
I put together a little oven in the garage with a large milk crate, a heat lamp, bathroom exhaust fan & some wood dowels. Steady temp of 110 degrees and I can dry 180 at a time. Just dunk > hang > blot > dry. I can fill it (all 180) in about an hour. 1 day for each coat to dry I can have 180 ready to tie in 3 days.

Yep, couple of Rebulls and I'm whipping out 1 per minute!chongo469 wrote:For a second, I read you can have 180 tied in 3 days.... I was like holy crap!!!!... Lol
Naw if that were the case it would be worth my time to try to sell them for a profit!
I could probably tie 180 just plain ol single color, no frills rabbit hair jigs in 72 hours, but my eyes would be shot, my fingers would be destroyed, and I would have a weeklong migrane afterwards.

Re: today catch of da day
I tried the fancy jig paints and powders but the heads seem to be softer than the paint and it flakes off so I've gone back to cheap nail polish, I found the key is to use an etching cleaner on the heads first. I normally palmer the fluf on so mine take a bit longer to tie. For the most part I'll spend a couple hours putting paint on, then tie one or two jigs a day while working on other stuff at the keyboard. The cheap polish comes in the best colors and some has sparkles!
PS I'm being pre-emptive and using only no lead jigs with Owner 2X strong hooks.

Re: today catch of da day
I have gotten used to them now odh since we pour our own cannon balls and pencil lead as well. Anyone tried making floats before? I tried making simple dink floats before out of foam and then tried painting them but the paint would just chip off.

The nice floats are carved from balsa and then have a carbon fiber veil epoxied over them, then painted.
OTH/Slayer, You very well may catch more fish but you won't have as much fun. Here's one of my favorite Skagit Coho Slayers. Never miss. Not to shabby on metal or chums too:
