What's in a name?

Mine is really a simple one. When I was a baby I use to scoop into my diaper and grab handfulls and fling it. lol NAHH.
My kids would act up when they was younger and Id keep a pooh bear close to me. Id fling that down the hall and hit them upside the head. I figured its soft and fluffy so it wont hurt em but would get there atention. And it sure worked. The nic has stuck around for about 8 years or so now.

I was originally given my nick name "Big D" by one of my Dads drinking buddies who coincidently was my high school football coach. A 6”5’ 270 pound senior with a first name of Darren made for a natural fit at the time.

It was many years later that my nick name would take on an entirely different meaning. While working as a police officer I was dispatched to a domestic dispute. Upon my arrival to the home in question I was greeted by two fellow officers from a different agency. The bad guy had seen them pull up and when they had attempted entry into the home they found that the front door had been barricaded. We could hear the guy on the other side of the door yelling, screaming and generally talking trash about law enforcement. During one of his tirades I heard a woman scream and for me that was all it took. I made a run at the door and wouldn’t you know it…the door wasn’t really barricaded. It turns out that when my fellow officers tried to make entry the guy had just been leaning against the door. Well to make a long story short…me, door and the bad guy all made it to the other side of his living room floor stacked up like a bad guy sandwich with me and the door pinning the bad guy to the floor. The bad guy was arrested without further incident. As the bad guy was being escorted to the back seat of a waiting patrol car one of the other officers made this statement to him...

“There I was with everything going along just fine and a big door slapped me in the face”.

In his drunken state and hearing this statement the bad guy assumed that my name was Officer Door.
By the end of my shift, the name was set in stone and very soon thereafter shortened to the aforementioned “Big D”

My full name consists of three last names and are not ones that most people would come across on a daily basis here in the States. Rank and last names are used to address people in the service and to save themselves from mispronouncing my last name it became G-man the day I entered Marine Corps boot camp.

As soon as I can find some lettering in a graphic style that appeals to me, I will be naming my boat "G-SQUARED", as a mathematical play on my initials.

I'm hoping this will clear the air with your handle now. I got it, but was asked the other day what's that handle about and had to tell them "it's not what you think". LOL Keeps people guessing that's for sure.

As you might imagine, my handle is just my name. XD

However, I usually go by Sticky or Mr. Sticky everywhere else. That started with Halo 2, when I used to be good with 'sticky grenades'. I have since stopped playing Halo, but now Sticky is my rave name.

As for my name.... I had this name for years. Used it in a number of forum sites elsewhere that have nothing to do with the said topic of fishing. I also have a sign that says GoneFishing that I put on the door of my office when I leave for the day... my employer knows I mean it when I call in some days saying I can't come in today... I've got a bad case of fishatitis!

I choose SILENT ANGLER because I am born deaf and use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate with my deaf fellows. Unfortunately I can't even prounce a right word in voice so I have to communicate with hearing people via writing.

Some anglers enjoy fishing with me because I never make a noise or able to tell a lame and long story. For those anglers like to talk long and strong might think I am too quiet for them. Fortunately, it is when I am totally in the "zone." The best thing is that the fish will never know who is throwing a lure ( white, black, or handicapped
person, etx.)

Hey Silent... you are one up on me then even if you can't pronounce words correctly ... meaning you are making an effort at it. My hearing loss was "discovered" when I was around the age of 8 and have been wearing hearing aids since then. My hearing loss has gotten worse over time but thankfully the technology for the hearing aids has gotten better and the darned things aren't nearly as big as they use to be.

The point is I don't sign. I can read some of it but can't wrap my head around signing if that makes any sense at all... I guess my limited reading ability comes from being "exposed" to people that use ASL when I go to my audiologists office. About a month ago I walked out of the speech and deafness center I go to only to find that my car was no longer where I parked it. I turned around and walked towards the building wondering "had I lost my mind?" A lady came out of the building and I asked if she had seen my car without thinking that she might be "deaf". Well she starts signing to me and attempting to speak. And as you know that can be difficult to do when you don't know what words may sound like. From the conversation that took place over the next few minutes I knew that a tow truck had towed the car. I knew both the license plate number of my car and the license plate number on the truck... a description of the guy that towed me and when it had happened.

At that point I was kind of at a loss. Not so much because of the car but on how I could thank her. She looked a little depressed after the conversation. One of the employees that I know came out of the building and I explained what had happened between me and this woman and if she could tell her that I am thankful for the information she provided. The employee did so and then said that the woman was a little jealous because I have something that she doesn't and she explained what that was. I turned to both of them and said I understood what she had said. And that her speaking ability is way better than my ability to sign.

Mine is straight forward and to the point and available. Brian is the first name hence the 'B'. Now, I am not to be confused with the AM-1000 news guy or the ex-port authority / politician out on the peninsula. Other fishing sites I am on as SkagBass. And the boat name is... "You call that a boat?"

Cool thread. I chose tmusky1 because after catching my first tiger, I went on a 3 year dry spell without catching another.

I was beginning to think that 32"er was going to be the only "1" I would ever catch. Fortunately, that was not the case. I am

reminded of that musky every time I look at my right thumb and see the small puncture scars where he clamped down

through my glove right to the bone. :pale:

On May 12th of 1989 my son AJ was born. For as long as I can remember, whenever I would attend a school function I would hear, "Hey aren't you AJ's Dad"? AJ was the best and most important part of my life. He loved to hunt, fish and play baseball. My son passed away on August 13th of 2008 at the age of 19. I can't think of anything I would rather be called than "AJ's Dad". I love you bud!

tmusky, thanks for the comment. I was not here looking for sympathy, I heard about the thread and sometimes this type of thing helps me to deal with the loss. He was my son, my best friend, and my hunting and fishing partner. Every fish I catch for the rest of my life is dedicated to him. If you ever see my boat you will see "Fishin for AJ" on the side of it. "Happy Fishing"
