Dogs are 4 legged creatures that bark. lol Dogs are chum salmon aka Dog salmon because of the canine like teeth they get when spawning

Chum salmon. If you havnt seen one they have HUGE K9 teeth that are almost dog like. I have seen them tear muskie gloves to shreds and they will almost "bark" ( sounds like more of a hiss, to me) when you take them out of the water. Mean fish. Also called a dog salmon because the Eskimos used to feed them to there slay dogs beacuse of their abundance and high oil content. Really good for the sled dogs coat.

Yes and for the real reason for the name.... :-$ Alaska natives feed their dogs chums or "dog salmon", they aren't fit for human consumption. :-" :-" The other highly held theory comes from them spawning anywhere, some times even in the salt or brackish water in the mouth of a stream or river. They're just like dogs, they'll _ _ _ _ anywhere, just like dogs! #-o

I always hear fishermen say that chum have "high oil content".

I am not sure where they are getting this info. From my perspective, chum tastes bad because they have such low oil content.

Here are some links, showing chum and pinks to have the lowest oil content amongst the 5 salmon species (chum have 7.4 grams of fat per 1/2 pound, whereas kings have 20.6 grams of fat per 1/2 pound):

I have heard people say that too and no not true. When I had first heard this tale about why they call them dog salmon I called BS, because chums dont have high oil content. But a chum salmon compared to other things in the wild, that a musher could feed his team, I think is where they get the high oil content theory. As compared to other salmon chum dont rank too high in oil, but maybe compared to foul, berries etc. etc. Make sense? But who knows if thats even true, thats just a theory I came up with to try to justify their story

Im thinking they call them dogs because of the teeth. Those are some monsters. These fish are ugly but man there fun. They hit ok. And when you set the hook man its on. They dont like giving up easy at all. Was fun catching them all day.
More fish please!
