WTB Camper

Post by Mossy » Thu Jun 18, 2009 12:36 pm

Hey guys/gals,
Looking for a camper to fit in my F150 short bed. She is tired of tenting and I want to be able to pull my boat so we agreed on a slide in. Doesn't need to be new but needs to be clean. Let me know if anyone has upgraded and looking to sell. Thanks

You may have a difficult time finding a slide in for a shortbed let alone a 1/2 ton. Pine Mountain campers by Starcraft make a pop-up slide in camper that your 1/2 should handle. Anything heavier and you'll be exceeding your GVW and your tire/wheel weight capacity.

There are several other manufacturers of pop-up campers, but Pine Mountain seems to be the more common one you'll find in this area.

looks a little(alot) out of my budget. My GVW is 7200lbs but I'm not sure what my curb weight is. I had a lead on an 89 jayco camper that was in a chevy 1/2 ton short box with no problems but it got sold on the drive there. Thanks for the link, seems like a nice setup. Wish I hadn't sold my diesel. Oh, when I say short box it's actually a standard box for the newer pickups 6 1/2 feet

I have had 5 campers:-# 1 ton only got the game done beefed = a 3/4 ton with airbags:-$ and shocks over rated ones :-$ would be swell as well then you add a tub/boat and gear then your talking brakes , drivelines and more .

Oil coolers and Tranny coolers A MUST and more to do it right:-$ and frame mounted Camper Tie downs period!!!:-$

The 1/2 ton is a fine grocery soft riding rig:colors: for sure but work horse there lean on the above and 8 ft beds a must:-$ as space in any campers even with slide outs always MORE!!!

PS = before it starts I know your 1/2 does it all#-o :-# :@: :cyclopsan NEXT!!! LMAO!

man swede, making me feel a little insecure. Had a 97 F250 powerstroke for 7 years but never needed it after I sold my horses and trailer and when she said "we" don't "need" that much truck anymore. Now I have this little 1/2 ton and can't even haul a load of dirt. Point taken, I'm getting a divorce.

Very true, been looking into those. Pretty much the same thing as a tent though. Except she won't be sleeping on the ground. Might be the way to go.

There are campers out there... I drive a Ford Ranger Edge, 6' bed, with a standard suspension. I found a late 1970's camper on Craigslist for $300 that was clean if not too "fashionable" on the inside, has everything but a bathroom, slides in with the tailgate down, and weighs right around 450 lbs with the water tank empty. This camper was built for the smaller trucks of its time- Datsun, Toyta, Ford Courier, Chevy Luv, etc. Filled and fully loaded with gear for two or three of us to fish and camp for the week, it drags just a bit below level on the springs, and only does 65 comfortably up the passes, but it works. Keep looking- you'll find what you need.

Don't know what you like... but I can tell the most fun vehicle I ever owned was a Volkswagen Westfalia Camper. I had an '83, air cooled. There are many styles to choose from. The most modern version is the Vanagon body style with the Westy pop top. These were made up until 1992. They have made others since then, but not the same as the orig. If you want to pay for it, there is even a 4WD version called the Syncro.
All the westies will have a refer. a propane two burner stove. A table to sit at. Pop top sleeper, which sleeps two, a bottom bed for two. A sink. Shore hookups for propane and electricity... closet, I could go on.........
Many add-on options available, tent awning for the side door, etc.

If you think the online community of fishing is fun, there a whole other set Westy freaks out there  who have their own online forums and talk about every gadget you can imagine. Google WetWesties.

disclaimer: It helps to be mechanical, they do have their issues.
