I've said it before but Tackle warehouse has a loaner program on their reels. You can try out one of them, or three, and decide what you like best. You pay just a small amount and they come all spooled up for use. I'd suggest getting on their website and havbing a few sent to your house to test and find what you like best before spending the money and not being satisfied. You wouldn't buy a car or a boat without driving it would you???

It also looks like Quantam is going to be thinking outside of the box with a new reel size for their 2010 line. They are going to have a 150 size baitcaster in their PT line. 100 size and 200 capacity. Sounds like a great reel with their ACS3 braking and all of the new technologies they are puting in them. Check them out on tackletour.com

I also like going to Bassboatcentral.com and looking in their reels forum for my purchases. I'm positive that many of the guys on lakes have made purchases there and hav not been dissapointed.

All just my thoughts and opinions... I'll keep my mouth shut now.:-#

Great input. I'll have to try Tackle Warehouses loaner program out next time I decide to buy a reel. Im pretty new to this whole baitcast thing so I think experimenting with one reel for awhile I'll find likes and dislikes with it to help me with thepurchase of a higher end reel next go around.:bball:

I've ordered a bunch of tackle from TW, and didn't even know they had the loaner program. Never purchased a reel from them so that might be why, but anyways, cool, learn something new everyday! Thanks! -Dave

Since I mentioned it, I thought I should provide a link to Tackle warehouse's demo page.

Thanks a lot. That really helps. I use mine primarily for Bass fishing, but my trion has done battle with the mighty chum and handled them well.

The 300 is awesome but if one is solely using it for bass fishing, that would be overkill in terms of line capacity and reel weight, unless swimbaits are going to be used. Just MHO.
And a darn fine opinion at that PINOY,..the 300 is perfect for SB'S! JMHO

BB,

What's up, bro?!!! Pinoy to Pinoy.:farao:

2000,

I heard about the loaner program, mighty enticing indeed.

after hearing so much about baitcasters, i picked up my first baitcaster - Shimano Citica 200E.

Let me say, i knew casting wasnt as easy but god damn it, I ran through an entire spool on the first day cuz of the worst backlash ever! Fortunately, I think I'm getting the hang of it but its takin some time...or maybe im baitcaster challenged cuz my friend has no problem using his lol

Learn the basics on how to set up the reel so you avoid backlashes before they begin. That reel is super sweet and smooth. Its probably one of the easiest reels to learn on. BACK when I tryed to learn I was using a plastic bodied Abu Garcia, and I gave up on Baitcasters for about 2-3 years. Start with a QUALITY reel like you have done, and you'll be good in no time.

I caught some piggies on my magaforce that I got when they were really cheap and never had a single problem so I would say it is case by case:-"
i opened my megaforce up and looked at the gears for the first time since it started acting up (twitching bar jams and twitches when i reel) turns out the gears for the twitching bar are plastic. the main crank is metal but not the others. a couple of the teeth on the plastic gears broke off anf they kept jaming up. i ended up taking out the gear for the twitching bar and tightening the gear down all the way so the bar doesnt move anymore. the reel now works fine minus the twitching bar.

i looked up reports on this reel and there were alot of similar results like mine and yours. so i guess it is just hit or miss.(guess i should have read the reports before i bought it)

hey folks...newbie question here.

so as some of you know, i got my first baitcaster a month or so ago. I've had some great success with it and I absolutely love it.

I've been using it mostly in freshwater but with salmon season justopening, I have also used it in saltwater and want to be using it more often. I would like to wade in using my baitcaster but a bit afraid of the salt...(i broke my previous spinning reel cuz i forgot to rinse) I almost always rinse out my baitcaster for a minute or two with freshwater after using in saltwater but I know alot of people recommend oiling/greasing it after rinsing which i haven't done.

my question is...where exactly should i be putting droplets of reel oil in/around a baitcaster.

I have a Shimano Citica if that matters.

thanks in advance :)

Go to shimano's web page and navigate to customer service maintenance section. They have downloadable pdf files on how to perform basic maintence on your reel.

It is so simple to do that even someone like me can do it. When I use my reels in the salt, I clean them as soon as I get home. Water can get into the reel so you HAVE to take it apart to remove that water and any other debris. Like I said, it is really simple. Trust me.

I love high tech, and one day I'll get in the loop with some newer baitcasters. Right now all my stuff is old school, and still serves me pretty well. Not being a purist / cork sniffer, just getting back into the fishing thing after a lengthy lay-off. I still use a 5000 (the old red ones) that my Dad bought in the 40s, and another red 5000 that I bought as my first baitcaster for myself as a young adult in the late 70s. Some of you know which Garcias I'm talking about. At the time I think those reels were setting the bar for all the rest. They are still catching fish, and I guess that's what matters. Not being nostalgic, just haven't quite caught up yet, as I've been spending most of the spare cash on the boat that sat for 10 years.

i recieved my first baitcaster this year. never used one or even taught to use one. for fathers day my wife got me the Abu Garcia revo sx with the 7.1:1 ratio. sure i had a birds nest here and there in the learning process. It didn't take long from there to get the hang of it. now its the only reel i like to use. worth every penny!! I have even caught a 19 and 3/4 inch 5lb largemouth with it. Smooth and hard cranking power to motivate even the bigger guys to get in my boat!! just my opinion.

nice bass woody! i've been mainly using my Shimano Citica as my main reel for salt and freshwater. I absolutely love it. Sometimes though, a spinning reel is just much easier to cast light lures with but I recently started casting senkos and light lures on my baitcaster with a little more confidence and I'm definitely getting the hang of it.

Unfortunately, just yesterday, i got the worst backlash ever when the hook of my jig hit my other fishign rod that was placed on rodholder on my pontoon. the entire reel was a complete birds nest but i managed to pick it out.

Just yesterday, i spooled up with my very first braid line! I can't wait to get out there and fish some of the deeper, messier structures and weeds.

quick tip on baitcasting bird nests. I was told when u get a bad birds nest and it gets stuck. put your thumb tight on the wheel and reel in a bit then try to get it un stuck. keep trying if the first time it gets stuck again. u should be able to get it out if u repeat this step. tight thumb on spool and reel in then press thumb bar and pull out, repeat. works good. hope that made sense to you
