i like the revo's too. 24 lbs of drag pressure means you can spool up with 80 lb braid and basically turn the drag off and pull anything out off anywhere.

I am with you on this one. I can understand that some guys love the fight but in heavy cover there may be NO fight at all if you can't move the fish out of it. A short line fish is a lot of fun.

I started out with a stable full of Pflueger Trions. They aren't the best reel in the world but they are under $100 and I still fish with them. I started with 8 and I am trying to phase them out as I can afford to becuase the clutches eventually wear out but Pflueger has sent me a brand new reel every time I send one back. I am on the water 75+ day a year and I have noticed the clutches only wear out on rods I fish certain baits on. My 2 cents.

Could you let me know what type of lures your Trion got worn out on? I have one and replacements has always been a concern of mine with this reel. Performance wise and terms of feel, I'd put it on par with the Curado BSF. It's only weakness IMHO is that it does not fare well with weights from 3/16 oz in my hands.

My trion doesn't see much play these days, since I made it theft proof.

There are decent rods at the sub $100 level. Look at St. Croix, Shimano Compre and Clarus. Depending on what you want to do with the rod, both companies have models to suit most applications. If you're going to get a reel, invest in something at the Citica E class. The two best bets would be the Citica E or the Revo S at this price point. This is one area you DON'T want to skimp on. By skipping the daily latte, you can save $60/month. Do that for two months and you have the amount for a Citica.

What about quantum blue runner gold rods? I found a place selling them for $100 for 4 rods. The Citica has 3 ball bearings? Is this kinda low? Most I see are around 5+.

You know, you CAN get a great rod for next to nothing, if you know what you are looking for. This is one case where a friend can make all the difference. For example, I just purchased a 7' one piece ML Shakespeare Synergy Baitcaster rod at White Elephant in Spokane Valley. It is fantastic for the small to medium cranks and worms I toss for SMB, and for Browns, and they had it for only $15.99. I liked it so well I bought a second one.

On the other hand, I have a couple of $200+ rods that I bought sight unseen through the catalogs that are just back-up rods because I don't like the feel or action.

If you can find a friend that will let you test a trusted rod out, it can save you a ton of money in the future.

I have worn out to Pfleuger clutches mostly fishing jerk baits. I fish them a ton in the spring and fall and I fish them super hard. It probably wouldn't be an issue if I fished them different. For me it's more of a whip whip pause than a twitch twitch pause. It just puts an awful lot of tork on the clutch and they will free spool on the jerk but like I said I have sent them back to pflueger and they have replaced them. I also noticed the other day when I was servicing my reels that the new Trions have different guts and now that I think about it I haven't blown one out since the changes.

St. Croix has a new line up called the Mojo. I believe they are $90. I personally like the Shimano rods and have a bunch of Crucials but the Compre is a good rod too and it is $80.

Right now the Citica 200D (4) ball bearings and 1 roller bearing is priced at $89 for last years model making cheaper than the Trion. IMHO that is a great deal.

Where are you finding these prices. I found the compre for $99.99 and I can't find the Citica 200D anywhere, all I find are the E's#-o

Thanks for the input. I plan on getting a Revo S reel, found em for $100. Also plan on picking up a Shimano Compre 7' med crank rod. Thanks for the input again guys!

shimano curado 300dsv these are bull dog i cant think of any other reel that can turn a 18+ pound chum salmon and pull large bass from heavy structure

Hey TnJ,..I also have the MegaForce I use for Flippin-Jigs,..my Twitchin-Bar was also acting up so I took it off,..works fine without it!

The 300 is awesome but if one is solely using it for bass fishing, that would be overkill in terms of line capacity and reel weight, unless swimbaits are going to be used. Just MHO.
