Phase one
I just want to catch one.
Phase two
I want to catch them all everywhere.
Phase three
I want to catch the biggest record fish.
Phase four
I want to share the fishery with everyone and make it better for the next generation.
I don't remember where I heard this saying.
I am proud to know folks at every phase.

4 phases of muskie fishermen
I'm not in the toilet yet, but I'm definitely standing on the rim.
RE:4 phases of muskie fishermen
I remember being told a very similar saying from Bob "can of spam" York when I was a youngster. I remember it like it was yesterday, the 4 stages in the life of a fisherman:
I just want to catch a fish
I want to catch a lot of fish
I just want to catch a big fish
I want to catch a lot of big fish
He was at the last stage when he recited this to me while my dad and I were having dinner in his trailer parked on the bank of the Thompson River, that was in 1981.

RE:4 phases of muskie fishermen
what type of gear are required to fish for musky?
RE:4 phases of muskie fishermen
Well to start you generally would like to use heavier gear for these tooth critters as they can get very big and heavy and they are built for speed. Medium heavy/heavy rod. Depending on who you ask you can use a variety of lines from 15lb test up to 65lb and 80lb braid or mono. Since they have sharp teeth you will want to have a leader that attaches to you lure so they won't bite through your line. Again depending on who you ask you could use a flourocarbon leader or steel/titanium. You will also want a reel that can handle a fair amount of line so when these beast decide to bolt you and let them run for a while (not as big as ocean gear though) without worrying about running out of line.reigndawgs wrote:what type of gear are required to fish for musky?
We actually have a muskie school coming up on April 4 that is going to cover everything you need to know about muskie fishing in the state of Washington. Below are links of the flyer for the school as well as a registration form if you are interested. The event is going to be fantastic. We have a long time legend and historian (Not many people know him out here since he has nothing to do with salmon or steelhead fishing) of muskie fishing that will be at the school as well as a lot of successful muskie anglers from chapter 57 including 2008 angler of the year Brett Olson to demonstrate lures and techniques as well as answer questions. The individuals who are contributing to the show are a good group of folks who are always willing to answer questions and provide there wealth of knowledge when it comes to these beauts. You could also visit Chapter 57's website http://www.nwtigermuskies.com/ for additional information or you could come to our chapter meeting this thursday March 19 at 6:30pm at Round table Pizza in federal way. You don't have to be a member to come so don't hesitate to come meet and greet, we would love to see you there.
