20lb sack in the winter

Post by marktfd88 » Fri Feb 27, 2009 6:11 pm

So hit Washington today with a fellow club member who is trying to learn about winter smallie fishing. Bluebird skies and light wind from the north doesn't fit the bill for having the best winter day I have every had. Start the morning in the east channel and get a 3lb 9oz right off the bat. Go 2 more hours nothing. Head up to mid lake and get 2 more fish a2.5lb rat and a 3lb 8oz on grubs and dropshot. Head further up north and hit a spot for 3 fish in 30 minutes. 5lb 12oz , 4lb 3oz and 3lb 10oz. 2 on the rev rig and one on a tube. Poor John is sitting in the back of the boat and does manage two real nice trout but still has the winter smallie jinx. Hopefully I have pointed him in the right directions and he will break the sting this weekend.

Picture of the 5lb er will get posted as soon as it's emailed to me.

Here's the 5lber that topped off the bag

great catches

just a tip on the pictures, to reduce alot of the shadows, its good to have the sun behind the shooter, and not the catcher.

Killer bag Mark! Sounds like a fun day, except for poor old John, you could have thrown him one. [-o< I need to get out there and still get my first of the year.

Hey marktfd88,
Those photos make me want to switch over to Bass fishing.
I know it's probably a dumb question but can you tell what you wearing on your head. Is it a face mask/helmet to keep you warm?
Thanks!

Big D,
Yeah it's a face mask that we wear while going down the lake at 60mph. In 40 degree weather they are real life savers. I just tilt it up on my head when I get to the fishing spot. ( call me lazy ) but putting it away every time just cut's into fishing time.
Anytime you would like to come out and try bass, give me a shout.

Its good to see some success at these cold times. I think I know where your "Northern" spot is :). Its a good place, and I have never been skunked there. Good catch, especially the 5+ one!

Ok it's on then 25 lb bag it is. Of course I'll have to go to Cali to the Delta this spring to pull that off. Fortunately, I have a ringer for a guide that can help me out in that department down there. Or it might be I have to go to Clear lake and pull it off, my preference is the Delta though. If you forced me to fish in the Northwest, I would have to say Couer D Alene. When I fished it last year for the BASS Federation, I caught a 23lb sack in practice.
