if you know how to throw sidearm, or throw a frisbe, its basically the same motion. like anything - practice practice practice.

learn to hit the hole in one attempt, as sometimes thats all you get.

Practice, practice, practice is right !! I like to skip senkos. Some do well with tubes. Thats with a spinning reel. I can't skip near as well with a baitcaster but I'm learning.

I dont plan on moving up to a baitcaster until I can get better with my spinning reel.

Best 2 have the right equipment if you want 2 skip your bait under a dock,..@ least 6' 6" stick med/hvy,..a jig with a trailer is good for this with a rattle if the water is dark if it's clear it's not that critical!

Ok looks like I will have to get a new rod and reel. I just watched something on On Demand and KVD was talking about what color jigs and trailers for different colored water and when you need to use a rattle. Thanks.

Other than sidearm there is also the b!tch slap method. I can do the sidearm, but I the other way is much more accurate. I can only do it with a baitcaster, but then again a baitcaster is where more people seem to want to be. Why not put the spinning reel down and use the caster? Thats what I did and it has worked out much better for me.

skipping a soft plastic is like skipping a rock you jus need to figure the tip of the pole is the end of your hand. It is all about the angle and the release I release mine about 2 foot off the water and try to keep the trajectory flat as possable. Don't be affraid to put some power behind it this is not for sissy casters:-"

You want to cast with a flat trajectory which is why a side arm cast is the best place to start. As mentioned that sort of cast is much easier to master with spinning tackle (not nearly as many blacklashes). With the flat cast aim for water surface at the front edge of the dock; you are attempting to skip the lure back under the dock (much like skipping a stone)

Also as mentioned it is my thinking that soft plastic lures are a good beginning bait. I have found that tube lures with the jig head (if you use a slip sinker be sure to peg it) placed inside the tube or grubs texas rigged to be a very good skipping baits. If you are going to do much skipping it really helps to super glue all plastics to the hook/jig head.

I like a 6 or 6 1/2 foot medium to med-heavy rod coupled with a good reel loaded with 6 or 8 pound mono. I would recomending starting with 8 pound line and 1/8 ounce jig head with a texas rigged grub. Should limit your problems as you master this approach. Once you have the basics down you can refine the approach to fit the situation. I find that most of my skipping is down with smaller stuff with 6# line.

One final note - be sure to frequently check your knots. Skipping places stress on the knot and it will fagitue. It check it every 15 minutes or fish which every happens first and re-tie every hour or as needed.

At first, you think you're gonna just slam the lure right down into the water, but with enough strength, that thing will skip right under the dock. Like Smalma said, try to slap the lure on the water right about the edge of the dock. Try different angles. Pretty soon, you will be able to get those things way back beyond the dock.

i do ***** slap skipping since its easier for me to aim/control the lure. I usually let it skip 1-2 times before it goes under the dock. and sonnn is very good a skipping soft swimbaits deep under docks...IMO the best skipper ive fished with.
